COACHELLA, Calif. (March 27, 2020) – The Coachella City Council approved an eviction moratorium for residents struggling to pay their bills due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

To assist those struggling financially as a result of coronavirus, the City Council approved a temporary moratorium on foreclosures and evictions from residential and commercial properties through May 31, 2020. Residents must notify landlords if they need to temporarily suspend payments and make arrangements to pay the missed payments within six months after the end of the current State of Emergency. This city moratorium will help protect residents even if the state eviction suspension order is lifted.

The City previously suspended residential water service shutoffs due to late or delinquent payments, along with any new late payment charges through the end of May.

“We understand this is a difficult time for all of us, with a lot of uncertainty,” said Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez. “With many residents losing their jobs, we are trying to help people maintain the basic necessities; access to fresh water and a place to stay.”

In addition, the city approved a measure to enhance efforts to crack down on non-essential businesses that are still operating despite the current state and county orders.

The City of Coachella is closely monitoring developments of this public health emergency and will take additional action if necessary to protect public health and safety.
